ABC’s World News Tonight snagged the largest overall audience for the first two weeks of the 2016-17 TV season, marking the first time on that in 17 years. The David Muir-anchored newscast clocked nearly 8.3M viewers during Debate Week, besting NBC Nightly News’s 7.9M and CBS Evening News’s 6.6M on all five week nights.

Lester Holt’s NBC newscast dominated Debate Week among the 25-54 year olds who are the currency of news programming ad sales. In the news demo, Holt’s newscast clocked 2M viewers, to Muir’s 1.8M and 1.5M news-demo viewers for Scott Pelley’s CBS newscast. It was Nightly’s best Non-Olympics average in six months, and its 61st first-place finish of the past 62 weeks.
