The buzz on this title is that it’s so shocking, you’ll think twice before you ever eat red meat again. Raw, French writer/director Julia Ducournau’s psychological horror directorial debut which took the Fipresci prize at last May’s Cannes Film Festival during Directors’ Fortnight, will open Friday, March 10 via Focus World in select cities. Garance Marillier portrays Justine, a vegetarian who is studying to be a veterinarian. She gets pressured at school to try meat for the the first time, and it’s all downhill from there as she plumbs both the depths of her own soul and tests the limits of her darkest cravings. Raw will be available on digital platforms during the summer. Raw has gathered a kudo momentum on the festival circuit including the Sutherland Award for Best First Feature at the BFI London Film Festival earlier this month, the Best Director award at Fantastic Fest’s “Next Wave” competition; the Golden Octopus Award and the Audience Award at the Strasbourg European Fantastic Film Festival; and three prizes at the Sitges-Catalonian International Film Festival including the Citizen Kane Award for Best Up-and-Coming Director, the Méliès d’Argent Award for Best Feature-Length European Film, and the Carnet Jove Jury Award for Best Feature-Length Film.
