London-based Roughcut TV is backing Who’s On First, a new feature film production shingle that’s a joint venture between Roughcut’s former head of comedy Dan Hine and managing director Ash Atalla. The focus will be on mainstream comedies and dramedies with full funding for the development of its first feature, & Mrs, secured via the Los Angeles Media Fund.
& Mrs, penned by London-based Australian playwright Melissa Bubnic (Boys Will Be Boys, Shameless), is a darkly comic take on the wedding movie genre. It’s described as the bittersweet story of a girl who decides to go ahead with her nuptials despite the fact that the groom has just died.
Other Who’s On First projects in the pipeline include adult ensemble comedy Home Time from writer/director Dylan Kidd (Roger Dodger); a high-concept TV comedy/drama from Vicky Jones (Fleabag); and a blind script deal with actor/screenwriter, Sophie Wu (New Blood).
Hine, who has produced three season’s of BBC/Netflix comedy, Cuckoo, also oversaw Roughcut’s first look deal with HBO. He will be Managing Director of Who’s On First.
Roughcut recently set six-part comedy series Carters Get Rich at Sky 1 starring James Van Der Beek. Atalla (The Office, The IT Crowd) says the move behind Who’s On First is to build a British brand of bold genre comedy that will travel internationally.
Who’s On First is repped by CAA’s Roeg Sutherland and Laura Lewis.
