Freeform has given a pilot green light to Brown Girls, a multi-camera comedy pilot from writer-producers Shilpi Roy (Hipsterhood) and Nastaran Dibai (According to Jim, Malibu Country) and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment.

Qritten by Roy and Dibai, Brown Girls centers on the relationship between Rimmi, an Indian-American aspiring beauty vlogger, and Devi, a young woman who has recently emigrated from India. Brought together by family, Rimmi and Devi instantly clash over their different views on modern life and love while slowly realizing they both have something to learn from one another.

Roy co-executive produces the pilot, which is executive produced by Dibai, Tracy Katsky, Aaron Kaplan, and Dana Honor. The Big Bang Theory‘s Mark Cendrowski is in negotiations to direct.

“We love this odd couple comedy not just because it is a sophisticated, funny show but we are thrilled to tell a story about part of the American experience that isn’t really on TV today,” said Freeform’s Karey Burke.

This is the second multi-camera pilot order at the network since Burke joined as head of development two years ago, launching a push into single-camera comedy. Multi-camera sitcoms — area where Freeform first established itself with originals — remain the network’s most successful half-hour series with Baby Daddy and Young & Hungry.

Brown Girls joins three other Freeform pilots, single-camera comedy Alone Together, magazine drama Issues and mermaid thriller The Deep.

This marks the third development collaboration between Kaplan and Dibai, following single-camera comedy Follow Your Heart at ABC in 2014 and multi-camera Funny In Farsi, also at ABC, in 2009, Kaplan’s first pilot as a producer. Dibai also served as co-executive producer on Kapital Entertainment’s CBS comedy series Friends with Better Lives. Dibai is repped by WME, New Wave and Jamie Mandelbaum.

At Freeform, Kaplan previously executive produced drama series Chasing Life, the network’s first single-camera comedy series, Kevin from Work, as well as the Nicki Minaj comedy pilot.
