Fox has given a script commitment plus significant penalty to Bad Sugar, a single-camera comedy from writer-producer Patty Breen (Suburgatory), Divorce and Catastrophe‘s Sharon Horgan and her Merman banner, Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment, UK’s Tiger Aspect and 20th TV.
Written by Breen based on the British format, Bad Sugar follows the sexy and scheming heirs of a wealthy mining mogul as they battle each other to become the next head of his fracking empire.
Breen executive produces with Merman’s Horgan and Clelia Mountford, Kapital’s Kaplan and Dana Honor. Also expected to serve in a producing capacity are Sam Bain, Jesse Armstrong, Olivia Colman and Julia Davis.
Bad Sugar, conceived by and starring Horgan, Colman and Julia Davis, written by Bain and Armstrong and produced by Tiger Aspect, was originally ordered by Channel 4 as a pilot, which aired in 2012. The pilot was picked up to series, but due to scheduling issues among the talent, the show could not be made (watch a clip from the pilot episode below).
Horgan has been very busy, creating/co-creating and starring in some half-dozen series over the past decade. She currently has two series: Catastrophe on Amazon/Channel 4, which she co-created and stars in; and HBO’s Divorce, starring Sarah Jessica Parker, which she created. Horgan, who executive produces both shows through Merman, was nominated for an Emmy for co-writing the pilot episode of Catastrophe with Rob Delaney.
Bad Sugar reunites the auspices behind the 2014 Fox comedy pilot Dead Boss, which also was based on a British series created by and starring Horgan, with Breen writing/executive producing the U.S. adaptation and Horgan and Kaplan executive producing.
Horgan and Kaplan, whose Merman Films and Kapital Entertainment have a joint venture, are frequent creative partners who have collaborated on five pilots to date — Pulling, Bad Mom and Bad Management at ABC; Dead Boss at Fox; and Divorce at HBO, which went to series. Except for Bad Mom and Divorce, the others were based on series Horgan originally created in the UK.
Horgan is repped by WME. Breen, who serves as a consulting producer on Divorce, is repped by UTA. Tiger Aspect is with CAA.
