Monk alum Tony Shalhoub has been cast opposite Rachel Brosnahan in Amy Sherman-Palladino’s Amazon drama pilot The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Set in the 1950s, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel centers on Miriam “Midge” Maisel (Brosnahan), who had her life mapped out for herself: go to college, find a husband, have 2.5 kids and throw the best Yom Kippur dinners in her elegant Manhattan apartment. But when her life takes an unexpected turn, Midge will have to decide quickly what else she’s good at. Going from uptown housewife to a stand-up comic in a grungy club in the Village is an appalling choice to everyone but Midge. Shalhoub will play Abe Weissman, Miriam’s father, an academic and intellectual who believes in books and facts and speaking as little as possible.

Sherman-Palladino wrote the script and executive produces with Dan Palladino.

Shalhoub is best known for his starring role as the obsessive-compulsive detective Adrian Monk in USA’s long-running series Monk, for which he three Emmys and a Golden Globe. He plays Sen. Red Wheatus on CBS’ BrainDead, which recently wrapped its first season. Additional TV credits include Nurse Jackie, Too Big to Fail and Wings. His film work includes Big Night, The Siege, Galaxy Quest, Men in Black, Men in Black II and Pain & Gain. He recently wrapped Tomboy, starring Michelle Rodriguez and Sigourney Weaver, and Final Portrait, directed by Stanley Tucci. Shalhoub is repped by ICM Partners and Mary Goldberg.
