Saturday Night Life continues the tradition of transitioning writers into on-screen duties. Mikey Day, who has been a writer on the venerable NBC late-night sketch program, is being added to the cast as a featured player for the upcoming season, sources say.

Day was tested as a featured player this summer when he recurred on Maya & Marty, NBC’s primetime sketch comedy series from SNL honcho Lorne Michaels. Day also served as a head writer on that show. He has been at SNL since 2013. Like many SNL writers and performers, Day comes from an improv background via stints with the Groundlings and on the MTV show Wild ‘N Out.

Leslie Jones is a big recent example of an SNL writer who successfully made the leap to the cast, emerging as a breakout star. Michael Patrick O’Brien also transitioned from a writer to a featured player for a season before returning to writing duties. “Weekend Update” anchors Colin Jost, Michael Che, Seth Meyers and Tina Fey also started off as SNL writers.
