CNN Films’  debut of Sundance docu Holy Hell was No. 1 in its timeslot with 384K in the news demo – a 20% jump for the cable news network compared to the prior four Thursdays in the slot.

CNN edged out FNC’s 370k and MSNBC’s 357k in the demo. In its CNN debut last night, Holy Hell clocked 1.03M total viewers. FNC led with 2M and MSNBC logged 1.6M.

The documentary about life inside Buddhafield, the cult-like commune that originated in the 1980s in West Hollywood, is directed by Will Allen, an aspiring filmmaker when he entered the New Agey commune-cum-cult, where he spent half his life, coming away with more than two decades of footage. Holy Hell premiered at Sundance and is executive produced by Jared Leto, as well as Michael C. Donaldson, Julian Goldstein, and Cheryl Wheeler Sanders. Allen is a producer, along with Tracey Harnish and Alexandra Johnes.

Holy Hell encores Saturday, at 8 PM and 10PM and is available across CNN’s mobile platforms.
