EXCLUSIVE: X-Men Apocalypse‘s Ben Hardy has been set as one of the leads in Sierra Burgess Is a Loser, a feature film that will serve as a modern retelling of the Cyrano de Bergerac story. Ian Samuels is attached to direct the script from Lindsey Beer, who was part of Akiva Goldsman’s writers room for the Transformers franchise. Black Label Media’s Molly Smith, Rachel Smith, Trent Luckinbill and Thad Luckinbill are producing.

The pic centers on a case of mistaken identity that results in unexpected romance when the most popular girl in high school and the biggest loser must come together to win over their crushes. It’s a female-empowerment film that takes on bullying, confidence and identity in the digital age.

Hardy, who played Angel in Fox’s X-Men: Apocalypse this summer, just wrapped shooting Haifaa Al-Mansour’s A Storm in Our Stars with Elle Fanning and Bel Powley. He’s now shooting Granite Mountain, another Black Label pic.

Samuels directed the Sundance 2015 short Myrna the Monster, in the works at MGM as a feature film. Beer was part of the writers room that spawned a series of Transformers sequels and spinoffs. The first of that bunch, Transformers: The Last Knight, is sent for next summer.

Hardy, Samuels and Beer are repped by WME. Hardy is also repped by CAM in the UK and Untitled, and Samuels by McKuin Frankel.
