The McLaughlin Group will turn out the lights for good after this week’s program.

John McLaughlin, who originated the program, died this week at 89 after missing the previous week’s show, marking his first absence of the franchise’s 34-year run. McLaughlin pioneered shout-festy political TV punditry when he launched the program in April 1982. In its heyday, The McLaughlin Group was a go-to subject of fun on Saturday Night Live.

This week’s edition of the show that airs on many PBS stations will pay tribute to the Jesuit priest/presidential speechwriter/political columnist, as reported by Variety.
