One of NBC’s few returning comedy series, Superstore, will air an original episode following one night of the network’s Rio Olympics coverage. With that plum lead-in, the episode is likely to snag a “giant audience,” but one that includes “a lot of new viewers who aren’t used to the show,” executive producer Justin Spitzer explained this afternoon at TCA.

Because the first season ended with a cliffhanger in which the staff of the superstore walked out, Spitzer said the Olympics episode will be a “bonus stand-alone episode.” It will take place in the pre-walkout world of the show. Only when the series returns on September 22 will it pick up where it left off on “real time” with the walkout, Spitzer explained.
