Starz in getting into the telenovela business. The premium cabler said at TCA today that it is working with Lionsgate and Televisa USA to develop Teresa, a serialized drama based on the popular Mexican series. Carlos Portugal (East Los High) will create the series and serve as showrunner.
Teresa focuses on an undocumented young Latina clawing her way into the exclusive world of Los Angeles wealth. The series will chronicle her ruthless pursuit of money and power and her willingness to do anything to get them. No cast has been announced.
“We’re excited to be working with Carlos, Lionsgate and Televisa USA on redeveloping this iconic telenovela for American audiences,” Starz managing director Carmi Zlotnik said. “Teresa will showcase a modern take on what it means to be Latina in America.”
Portugal co-created and is an executive producer, writer and director of Hulu’s East Los High and made his directorial debut with the Latino gay romantic comedy East Side Story, which he co-wrote with playwright Charo Toledo. Portugal also co-executive produced Body Of Desire, a primetime drama series for NBC that was based on the Spanish telenovela El Cuerpo Del Deseo, which aired on Telemundo in 2005-06.
