EXCLUSIVE: Antoine Fuqua, whose upcoming Western The Magnificent Seven will serve as the Gala Opening Night Film of the Toronto Film Festival next month, is in talks with Universal to direct a re-imagining of another screen classic. He’s negotiating to direct Scarface, the third iteration of the crime classic that Universal made in 1932 with director Howard Hawks and star Paul Muni and again in 1983 with director Brian De Palma and Al Pacino.
The new one borrows the immigrant rags-to-riches story but presents it in contemporary Los Angeles. Jonathan Herman wrote the most recent draft, and Paul Attanasio and David Ayer wrote previous versions. The film is a Bluegrass Films and Global Produce production. The film will be produced by Marc Shmuger, Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark. Marty Bregman, producer of the 1983 Scarface film, also will produce.
Fuqua, who has covered crime in several iterations including Training Day, The Equalizer and the upcoming Magnificent Seven, seems a strong match for the material. The project has been a priority for Universal.
Fuqua’s Magnificent Seven, a co-production between MGM and Sony Pictures, will be released by the latter on September 23. The film stars Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Haley Bennett and Peter Sarsgaard. Universal exec veep Jon Mone and veep Jay Polidoro will oversee for the studio. Fuqua is repped by CAA and Ziffren Brittenham.

Oceans? Scarface? This is getting embarrassing.
So this is what Antoine Fuqua does now? He remakes things?
HA! Good point. Indeed. You are correct!
Well, technically, he’s remaking remakes.
Yes haha!
Ah hell naw.
You can’t remake perfection.
Actually the version with Al Pacino is also a remake.
Is the only way to get hired these days is if you are willing to do a remake reboot recrap?!
LMAO, the number of remakes these days is laughable.
Fu.. NO. The original is a classic and a remake will not be better.
You know that the Pacino version is a remake, right?
Maybe he wasn’t talking about the Pacino version?
Lol
Please don’t
So is Universal just going to turn into a remake studio like MGM?
Your Are A Dumbass
Seriously. Please don’t.
I thought Pablo Larrain was on this.
As if any actor today is on the level of Al Pacino
If anyone at uni is actually reading this. The only way to do this is with Idris Elba. For reals.
no no no no no no no no no BAD IDEA no no no no no
He’ll walk. Always creative differences. He’ll want an African American actor (Probably Michael B. Jordan), the studio will say no, he’ll walk.
I love this idea it reminds me of Breaking Bad. Now say hello to my little book of remakes it’s more valuable than any illegal narcotic ever. People will kill for my little book of remakes they will do anything to obtain it.
They will NEVER match the 1983 version. Waste of time.
DePalma & Pacino’s 1983 version was a remake. Although it will be extremely hard to do it right, it is possible, however it is not likely
So the remake of THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN hasn’t even hit theaters yet, and Fuqua is considering this next? How do these people sleep at night?
WHY???
Great can’t wait to see Denzel butcher another classic
If they do this they`re gonna need Oscar Isaac to play Tony Montana.
They should get Sean Hayes to play Scarface. After all, if it’s gonna be a farce, they might as well get someone who’s good at it.
If there’s ONE director I have confidence in that this will be GOOD it’s Fuqua.
shit remake movie
The only way this works if its an all female cast and in eye popping 3D.
They should pull a Funny Games and have De Palma remake his own remake. #remake
