Paramount has released the first trailer for Rings, the third installment of the popular horror franchise that launched in 2002 with The Ring starring Naomi Watts.

From director Javier Gutierrez comes the return of Samara and the cursed tape that strikes terror to those who press play, which leads to their demise after seven days. “You’ve opened up a door, now no one is safe,” a mysterious man warns after a young woman sacrifices herself to the video in order to save her boyfriend. In doing so she makes a horrifying discovery: There is a “movie within the movie” that no one has ever seen before.

The film stars Matilda Lutz, Alex Roe, Johnny Galecki, Aimee Teegarden, Bonnie Morgan and Vincent D’Onofrio and is being produced by Walter Parkes and Laurie Macdonald from a screenplay by Jacob Aaron Estes, Akiva Goldsman, and David Loucka. The original The Ring was based on the Japanese film Ringu, which was adapted from the novel by Koji Suzuki. The Ring Two, also starring Watts, came out in 2005.

Rings rolls into theaters October 28, just in time for Halloween. Peep the trailer above.
