Two-time Emmy and Tony winner Andrea Martin is the latest to sign up for Hairspray Live!, NBC’s live musical produced by Universal Television that will air December 7 from Los Angeles. She will play Prudy Pingleton, the overprotective and often close-minded mother of Penny Pingleton (Ariana Grande) who doesn’t approve of her daughter being best friends with a rebel like Tracy Turnblad (Maddie Baillio).
SCTV alum Martin joins a cast that also includes Harvey Fierstein, Jennifer Hudson, Martin Short, Derek Hough, Kristin Chenoweth and guest stars Sean Hayes and Rosie O’Donnell. Based on the Tony-winning Broadway musical, Hairspray Live! takes place in 1962 Baltimore, where teenager Tracy Turnblad’s dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV program. When, against all odds, Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight and meets a colorful array of characters.
She is set to co-star on NBC’s midseason comedy Great News, playing an overbearing mother who rejoins the workforce as an intern at a news network to be close with her daughter. Martin won two Emmys for writing on the cult Canadian sketch comedy series SCTV and won Tony and Drama Desk awards for the 2013 production of Pippin and 1993’s My Favorite Year. She also scored Tony noms for Young Frankenstein, Oklahoma!, Candide and Noises Off. Her numerous TV credits also include My Big Fat Greek Life, Nurse Jackie and Difficult People. Her big-screen credits include My Big Fat Greek Wedding and its recent sequel, Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb.
