It’s been exactly a year since the the second season of Nic Pizzolatto’s True Detective ended its run on HBO to mixed response. Will there ever be a third installment of the crime franchise that became a pop culture phenomenon with its initial run?

“It’s not dead,” HBO head of programming Casey Bloys said at TCA Saturday. “We are hoping for a third season. It’s a very valuable franchise for us.”

Pizzolatto, who is under an overall deal at HBO, has been working on other things, Bloys said. A third season will likely have somebody else writing, with Pizzolatto supervising, he said.

But “I’m not sure we have the right take for a third season yet.”

As for the long-in-the works Deadwood movie from series creator David Milch, “David is writing the script. We haven’t read it yet,” Bloys said. “I imagine it will be very good.”

Bloys said that he “feels good about it” but would not commit to a greenlight.

Production on the recently announced ninth season of Curb Your Enthusiasm will begin this fall for an expected 2017 premiere, Bloys said. There are no closed cast deals yet but “I imagine most of the cast will return,” he added.
