Two-time Oscar nominee John Malkovich is set to topline Humboldt, a crime drama series inspired by Emily Brady’s bestselling nonfiction book. The project, from Sony TV and Anonymous Content (True Detective, Mr. Robot), was written on spec by Michael A. Lerner (Love and Mercy). Humboldt is targeted for premium cable and streaming platforms.

The book, Humboldt: Life on America’s Marijuana Frontier, explores an insular Northern California community, which for nearly 40 years has existed primarily on the cultivation and sale of marijuana. Brady, who spent a year living with the town’s highly secretive residents, gives an intimate look at a community dependent on a forbidden plant, and of how everything is changing as legalization looms.

Malkovich will star as the charismatic patriarch of a quirky Northern California crime family.

Lerner executive produces with Elliot Webb (Alpha House), Alissa Philips (Childhood’s End), Alex Goldstone & Adam Shulman of Anonymous Content as well as Malkovich, with Jennifer Rawlings of Omni Artists Ltd. producing. Carl Franklin (House of Cards, The Affair, Bloodline) is set to direct and executive produce.

Humboldt falls outside Anonymous Content’s deal at Paramount TV, which has resulted in several series, Citizen, Berlin Station, Thirteen Reasons Why, Maniac and The Alienist.

This marks a rare foray into TV for Malkovich, who will next be seen in the features Deepwater Horizon and Valley of the Gods. He he repped by Rawlings.

Lerner is repped by ICM Partners and Anonymous Content. Franklin is with Paradigm and Anonymous Content. Brady is repped by ICM Partners.
