UPDATE, 4:15 PM: The road closures and security lockdown have started as Vice-President Joe Biden is in town to attend the ESPY Awards tonight. With the 5PM starting ABC broadcast ceremony occurring at the Microsoft Theater, downtown L.A. is the area to really avoid – as you can see from the LAPD’s list of closures below.
Having said that, the Veep is heading off to Hawaii almost right after the ESPYs so around the 110 Harbor Freeway and towards LAX is not looking so hot later on either – all of which is saying, it might be a long trip home tonight for some.
PREVIOUSLY, JULY 12 PM: Vice President Joe Biden isn’t on the ticket this election, but he is doing a West Coast sweep this week that would make any campaigner proud. In Los Angeles briefly tomorrow evening for a downtown appearance at the ESPN’s ESPY Awards, the VP’s visit means Bidenjam is back – and that means plan your drive home from work on Thursday carefully by checking out the full list of the LAPD’s announced road closures below.
After flying to town on Air Force 2 from a speech on trade in San Diego, Biden will attend the annual sports trophy show that airs live on ABC tomorrow evening at downtown’s Microsoft Theater starting at 5 PM PT. With Lebron James, Abby Wambach, Peyton Manning, Kobe Bryant, Justin Timberlake among those in attendance, the VP will be at the John Cena hosted event to present the Jimmy V Perseverance Award to Turner Sports’ Craig Sager, who has continued to work NBA coverage while battling leukemia. If that sounds somewhat familiar, it is because the last time the Veep was in town was for the Oscars in February. On that occasion, he took the stage at the Dolby Theatre to a standing ovation to talk about preventing sexual assault on campuses and introduce a performance by Lady Gaga.
Unlike the past few times he was in town during the past year, Biden will not be staying overnight but jumping right back into the motorcade to head out to LAX for a flight to Honolulu. After meetings in Hawaii, Biden will then be traveling to Australia and New Zealand for a five-day trip for discussion with leaders of the two Pacific nations.
Now, for obvious reasons, the LAPD and the Secret Service never put out the exact route the President or Vice President take when in town. However, might be a good idea to avoid the downtown area tomorrow if you can.
