Fox has set Jennifer Yuh Nelson to make her live-action directing debut on The Darkest Minds, the first installment of the young-adult novel trilogy by Alexandra Bracken. Shawn Levy and his 21 Laps banner are producing. Chad Hodge has written the screenplay. Hodge is the creator, show runner and exec producer of TNT’s Good Behaviour.
After a present-day pandemic wipes out 98% of America’s children and teenagers, the survivors develop psychic abilities and a fearful government forces them into “rehabilitation camps.” Sixteen year-old Ruby manages to break out of her camp and joins a small group of fellow gifted escapees on the run.
The first book was published late 2012, and all three were bestsellers.
Nelson comes out of animation, having co-directed the second and third installments of Kung Fu Panda with Alessandro Carloni and including a long list of credits on animated films. She’s repped by WME and Hansen Jacobson.
