While Sony’s femme-reboot of Ghostbusters is expected to take second place to Illumination Entertainment/Universal’s titan The Secret Life of Pets with respective weekend grosses of $40M-plus to $50M-plus, Fandango’s advance tickets sales for the Paul Feig-directed live action comedy tell another story. Currently, Ghostbusters is beating Pets in advance weekend ticket sales.
This makes sense from the perspective that Ghostbusters is tracking strongly among older females and that demo often plans their night out at the movies in advance with their friends. While Ghostbusters has alienated some male reviewers, female critics such as The New York Times’ Manohla Dargis and Time‘s Stephanie Zacharek have embraced it. As soon as these positive reviews began bubbling up, weekend pre-sales began clicking for Ghostbusters.
Ghostbusters is also the top pre-seller on Fandango among live action comedies this year, easily outstripping Central Intelligence (opening $35.5M) and Ride Along 2 ($35.2M) at the same point in their sales cycle on the website, and is also pacing similarly to Sony’s 2014 comedy 22 Jump Street which opened to $57M. Ghostbusters is also bound to be Feig’s and Melissa McCarthy’s top preseller on Fandango. In a Fandango poll about this summer’s movies, respondents mentioned Ghostbusters as the most anticipated comedy of the season.
