Game of Thrones stars Lena Headey, Maisie Williams and Liam Cunningham appealed to European Union leaders this week to do more for the approximately 57,000 refugees of the ongoing Syrian civil war who are currently stranded in Greece. The appeal came during a visit to operations of the International Rescue Committee programs in Greece and followed meetings earlier this week with refugees affected by the March deal between the EU and Turkey. The visit included trips to the island of Lesbos, where Headey met with a young Syrian woman traveling alone with three children under the age of 11, to Cherso in Northern Greece, where Williams met a young aspiring actor from Syria, who wants nothing more than the chance to live out her dreams in safety. Cunningham meanwhile met with Afghan and Syrian fathers who talked about their reasons for leaving their countries and what life is like for them as refugees.
“These smart, hardworking people want to go home. They want to return to their communities and to their neighborhoods,” said Headey in a statement. “They want their children to continue their education. They want to continue their university and they are stuck. They’re stuck. And they’re unbelievably sad. Understandably. We can do better for them. We must do better for them.”
“For me it is about the children… children with so much potential, so many hopes and dreams,” Williams said. “Where is the humanity that makes it acceptable for them to languish in refugee camps – in Europe?”

Added Cunningham, “This is not an earthquake, this is not a tidal wave. This is a man-made crisis. 57,000 stranded in Greece. Refugee camps in Europe? Is this truly the standard EU leaders want to set as the way to respond to the global refugee crisis?”
Game of Thrones recently completed its sixth season, with Headey, who plays Cersei Lannister, Cunningham, who plays Ser Davos, and Williams, who plays Arya Stark, all set to return for season 7, expected to premiere in April of 2017.

They should let the refugees move into their homes first. Be the change you want to see in the world.
I’m still waiting for updates from luvies Benedict Cumberbatch and Emma Thompson both of whom claimed months ago that they were going to take “refugees” into their homes. Haven’t heard anything since…
It’s not a sustainable solution though. It would be great if people started taking refugees into their homes, but it does nothing to fix the actual problem at hand.
My comment was tongue-in-cheek.
Rich people who can move themselves as far away as possible from these very same refugees who can’t speak any number of the European languages, thus limiting their work opportunities, which in turn means they will be in poverty, which makes them more likely to become criminals.
If they love refugees so bad, let them live in their homes, see how that works out. I imagine, after about a month (if that), they will drop the charade.
It’s situations like this that caused the Brexit in the first place. If you’ve been paying attention, the Swiss are having none of it because they have seen what’s happening in France and Germany.
Yeah I think most people got what you mean – the rich celebrities in their mansions and gated communities can STFU about stuff like this, nobody wants to hear from them. Let’s hear from the folks in the modest-to-poor neighborhoods where the refugees will end up, oh wait we have heard from them, they’re voting for Brexit and Trump.
I love people who use this excuse to demonize refugees , i work with lots of people from different countries some do not speak proper english even i am not english but never had any issues with doing my work and speaking english …
You can only claim refugee status in the first safe country. When a “refugee” passes through a half dozen or more countries in order to get to the one that offers that best in benefits and other free shit, they’re no longer “refugees” but rather “economic migrants” at best and invading ISIS terrorists at worst.
Again, well said!
I guess the current treatment of women by these newcomers is okay with these barely educated “celebs,” too, right? Oh and make sure Clooney offers up his castle in Italy. Do as you say, George.
Lol these people are beyond delusional. Take them into your homes. Let them by you daughters. They are of a completely different world. No desire to assimilate to western culture.
So they want to go home, is that the story? Well, give them food, water, and boats and point them toward Syria. Sounds simple enough.
They should let them have their jobs too
These people have it better than the Christians in the Islamic world.
Yea Christians are definitely safe here (with an exception of Lebanon which is the most diverse country in the area) and that should definitely change.
nice
Obama should just give the refugees Delaware, no one is using it.
Why don’t these celebrities appeal to NATO and the US to stop destabilizing Muslim countries? It is STILL the United States’ goal to remove Assad in Syria, even with ISIS as the region’s most powerful rebel group.
It’s strange how people focus exclusively on the refugees, but nary a peep about the years of bungling Western foreign policy that’s created chaos everywhere. Time to focus on the disease (endless global war) instead of just the symptoms (refugees).
Actually the US is targeting ISIS, and leaving Assad’s forces alone.
57,000 refugees means 57,000 people who would rather run than take a stand in their own country. If they won’t fight and die for their own land what makes you want them in the West? Where our ancestors fought and died so we can have the modern world we enjoy today. Enough with the exploitation and usery of the sense of Christian charity. Especially with those of 16th century thinking who view us as sub human and worthy of only rape and outright destruction.
Let the Arab world take care of their own. The Saudis can make ski resorts in the desserts, artificial rivers for fly fishing also in the dessert. They can provide homes for these “refugees”.
THE WEST IS THE BEST AND AMERICA IS THE GREATEST!
Well said, and these bleeding hearts are ignoring the facts that maybe this generation will live peacefully, but as we are seeing in many western countries now, its the second generation of Muslim immigrants & refugees that are becoming radicalised because they blame the west for their parents being forced out of their homelands. Their parents understand the true situation that caused them to leave, but the second generation listen to the fundamental fanatical versions of events and turn future generations against the nations that took them in and provided them free social welfare and safety among other things. Even in Australia it is becoming a massive problem.
so, US, Europe and Russia go and bomb their countries, they create or support groups that latter on became ISIS, Al Qaeda or wherever name you want to put on them, support dictators that after a while become crazy nuts …and everything for oil….but the refugees are guilty? I think you need to go out a little bit more and see the real world.
