Ariana Grande is a Dangerous Woman, but she’s got herself a nice gig for the holidays. The Nickelodeon alum and recording star has joined the cast of Hairspray Live, NBC’s live musical produced by Universal Television that will air December 7 from Los Angeles. She will play Penny Pingleton, the incorrigible best friend of Tracy Turnblad (Maddie Baillio).
Grande joins a cast that also includes Harvey Fierstein, Jennifer Hudson, Martin Short, Derek Hough and Kristin Chenoweth. Based on the Tony-winning Broadway musical, Hairspray Live! takes place in 1962 Baltimore, where teenager Tracy Turnblad’s dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV program. When, against all odds, Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight and meets a colorful array of characters.
Grande played Cat Valentine in the Nickelodeon comedy Victorious and its follow-up series Sam & Cat, and her other TV credits include Scream Queens, Saturday Night Live and voice roles in two Winx Club series. She also has a successful singing career, which her first two albums topping the Billboard 200 and this summer Dangerous Woman hitting No. 2. She’s had five top 10 singles and in 2014 had a record three songs among the top six on the digital chart.
