With 22-time Olympic medalist Michael Phelps finishing first in the men’s 200-meter butterfly last night, securing a historic fifth Team USA spot and heading to Rio, it was a viewership race between NBC’s Olympic Trials: Swimming (1.2/5) and CBS’ Big Brother (1.8/7).
In early numbers, it was a win for the long-running reality show with 6.02 million viewers to the 5.67M of NBC’s Olympic trials coverage. It was also a win for Big Brother among adults 18-49s, with the series topping the night and holding steady with its Season 18 premiere last week. The Comcast-owned net’s Olympic trialswere actually down a tenth from Tuesday’s in the demo and dipped 4% in total audience.
Overall, CBS won the night in the key demo with a 1.1/4 rating, while NBC inched ahead for a viewership victory with 4.86 million watching, compared with the House of Moonves’ 4.58 million.
Newbie American Gothic (0.7/3) was even with last week’s debut while a two-hour The Night Shift (0.8/3) block was down a tenth from its one-hour offering June 22. ABC and the CW were repeats on Wednesday.
Fox had a full slate with MasterChef (1.1/5) and Wayward Pines (0.8/3). The former was even with its final numbers of last week, which saw an uptick, and the latter was up a tenth.
