EXCLUSIVE: Larrikins, which is Aussie slang for “maverick” or “rebel,” is digging deep Down Under. DreamWorks Animation has culled together an all-Aussie cast of Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts, Rose Byrne and Ben Mendelsohn to join previously announced fellow Aussie Margot Robbie as voice actors for its new film.
Tim Minchin and Chris Miller are directing the animal rock ‘n’ roll musical. Minchin, composer-lyricist of the five-time Tony-winning Matilda The Musical, is composing the music for Larrikins. The film is expected to shift over from Fox to Universal for release, given the NBCUni acquisition of DWA two months ago. It was originally scheduled to hit theaters on February 16, 2018.
Rounding out the all-Australian cast are Jacki Weaver (Secret City, Silver Linings Playbook), Josh Lawson (House Of Lies, Free Birds), Damon Herriman (Flesh And Bone, The Lone Ranger) and Ewen Leslie (Janet King, The Mule).
The story follows a desert-dwelling marsupial known as a bilby who has lived under a rock his entire life before he is kicked out by his parents and told to get a life. He does so by going on a road trip with a band in the Australian Outback. The project was written by Harry Cripps and is being produced by Gregg Taylor, who transitioned from his head of development job at DreamWorks Animation to go all out on this film.
