Merritt Wever (Nurse Jackie), Jeremy Bobb (The Knick) and Thomas Brodie-Sangster (The Maze Runner) have been cast in the Netflix limited period drama series Godless. Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom), who had been in talks for the series, also is now set, joining previously announced Jack O’Connell.
Written, directed and executive produced by Scott Frank, Godless is a Western set in an 1800s New Mexico mining town.
Daniels will play Frank Griffin, the menacing leader of notorious gang. He’s searching for Roy Goode (O’Connell), once like a son to him, is now his mortal enemy. Wever is Mary Agnes, the brash widow of the late mayor of Le Belle, NM, a town where all of the men have died in a mining accident. Bobb plays A.T. Grigg, the editor of the Santa Fe Dailey Review, who has been obsessed for years with writing about the Griffin Gang. Brodie-Sangster portrays Whitey Winn, the town deputy. Devoted to both books and the sheriff, Whitey is afraid of no one, but is still a boy more than a man and has a lot to learn.
Daniels’ most recent film work includes The Divergent Series: Allegiant, The Martian, and Universal’s Steve Jobs. Wever, known for her role as Zoey Barkow on Nurse Jackie, recently recurred on The Walking Dead. The Knick alum Bobb will next be seen in HBO’s Mosaic with Garrett Hedlund. Brodie Sangster played the leading role of Newt in Fox’s The Maze Runner and sequel The Scorch Trials and is currently shooting the third film in the series.
Daniels is repped by ICM Partners and Martino Management.
