Fun Home, which won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2015, will mount its final Broadway performance on September 10, producers said today. That will make it 26 preview and 582 regular performances at the Circle in the Square Theatre and 114 performances at off-Broadway’s Public Theater, where it first opened in fall 2013. A 40-city national tour kicks off in Cleveland in October.
The musical, based on Alison Bechdel’s bestselling graphic memoir, opened on Broadway on April 19, 2015. It recounts Bechdel’s coming-of-age as an artist and lesbian and her discovery of her father’s homosexuality and suicide. Lisa Kron wrote the book, and the score is by Kron and Jeanine Tesori; both took home Tonys for their work. Sam Gold also won for Best Direction as the production earned 12 noms in all.
Fun Home recouped its $5.25 million capitalization after eight months at Circle in the Square, an impressive achievement after a fairly brief period and in one of Broadway’s smaller venues. During Fun Home‘s final week, will play on at 8 PM Monday, September 5, rather than Sunday, September 11.
