A24 (The Carmichael Show, Playing House) will produce and fully finance action comedy series Iron Fisting. Produced with Channing Tatum’s Free Association, the show, which will film a full season, was created by Brian Gatewood and Alex Tanaka. They will serve as writers and will executive producer alongside Rhys Thomas who will direct. The series will be produced independently and shopped to US networks afterwords.

Iron Fisting is being done as a fake Romanian cop show from the 1980s. Billed as “the greatest 80’s Romanian cop show ever”, Iron Fisting was inspired by American series like Miami Vice. It follows the exploits of two mismatched buddy cops as they seek to protect Communism and comrades from the evils of Capitalism.

”People are constantly asking us ‘when are you guys going to make a 1980’s era Romanian buddy cop show already…’ Well, you’re welcome world. Check back soon,” Free Association said in a statement.

This is a concept key art for the series, which is yet to begin casting. The series will be dubbed in English as a real Romanian series would be. Production will begin this September in Eastern Europe. There is no deal in place but I hear Tatum could do some voice over work.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be financing this one-of-a-kind project,” A24 said. “Brian and Alex have created something funny, fresh, and totally unexpected, and we are excited to collaborate with them, Rhys Thomas, Free Association, and of course Channing Tatum.”

A note to the producers from someone who grew up in the 1980s in neighboring (and fellow communist) Bulgaria: In that part of the world, there was no access to U.S. shows in the 1980s, and Coca-Cola came in bottles, not cans, made available to the masses for the major national holidays, 4-5 times a year. Under the communist regime, Romania was a police state ruled by the “People’s Militia” police force and the notorious secret police Securitate.

Saturday Night Live alum Thomas co-created, executive produces, and directs Documentary Now for IFC and Broadway Video, and recently directed John Mulaney’s tandup special The Comeback Kid for Netflix. He is repped by WME, 3 Arts Entertainment and Ziffren Brittenham.

Gatewood and Tanaka previously created, wrote and produced NBC’s Animal Practice. They are repped by UTA and Management 360.

A24 saw three of its movies win Oscars this year, Room, Ex Machina and documentary Amy.  Upcoming titles include Yorgos Lanthimos’ Cannes prize-winning The Lobster, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s Swiss Army Man, and Andrea Arnold’s American Honey.
