Anderson Cooper began his CNN primetime show tonight by reading the names of all 49 victims of Sunday’s shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando. It took seven minutes for him to read the names of everyone who was gunned down at 2 AM in the gay nightclub, and the anchor was audibly shaken during the litany.

“In the next two hours we want to try to keep the focus where we think it belongs, on the people whose lives were cut short,” Cooper said, explaining his show would not name or show a photo of the gunman. Other programs on CNN earlier in the day did name the killer.

“They are more than a list of names. They are people who loved and who were loved,” he said, choking up.

“We think it’s important that you hear their names,” Cooper concluded.
