EXCLUSIVE: Alfre Woodard and Talitha Bateman star in So B. It, the adaptation of prolific YA author Sarah Weeks’ 2004 novel that will have its world premiere in the Limelight section of next month’s Los Angeles Film Festival. Stephen Gyllenhaal directs Garry Williams’ script, which follows a 12-year-old girl named Heidi (Bateman) who lives with her mentally challenged mother as she travels alone across the country to learn the truth about her and her mother’s past. John Heard, Jessica Collins, Jacinda Barrett, Dash Mihok, Cloris Leachman and Michael Arden co-star.

Here’s the first look at the drama, a scene which features some grown-up acting chops from Bateman, whose credits include CW’s Hart Of Dixie on the TV side and Sony’s recent The 5th Wave. She also appears in the upcoming Kevin Spacey comedy Nine Lives and Vengeance: A Love Story.

Gersh is handling sales on So B. It, which is produced by J. Todd Harris and Orien Richman. Adam Tenenbaum and Michael Nelson exec produced. The pic bows June 7 at the ArcLight Cinemas Culver City after an earlier press and industry screening. A second showing is set for the next afternoon.

Check out the clip above. The fest opens tomorrow and runs through June 9.
