EXCLUSIVE: Chockstone Pictures has optioned rights to White Out, a story by famed mountaineer Reinhold Messner that will be adapted by Sascha Arango. Chockstone and Arango are already teaming on Arango’s adaptation of his own 2015 bestseller The Truth And Other Lies, a black comedy that just nabbed Brian De Palma as director.

The Italy-born Messner is the author of more than 60 books and has had plenty to write about: He made the first solo ascent of Mt Everest without supplemental oxygen, crossed the Gobi Desert and the Antarctic on foot, and has searched for the Yeti in Tibet. A leader in the environmental movement, he was a member of the Green Party in the European Parliament. Messner has been the subject of documentaries too including Werner Herzog’s The Dark Glow Of The Mountains.

“After thousands of climbs done all around the world, I would like to tell the story of being lost in an archaic landscape, which is infinite in size, danger and beauty,” Messner said. “Not we, the mountain itself plays the most important role in our adventures.”

Steve Schwartz and Paula Mae Schwartz are producing White Out, and Messner will executive produce. Roger Schwartz is a co-producer.

Said Steve Schwartz: “As someone who loves the mountains and climbing, this for me is the ultimate passion project. Messner had led a unique life, and some of his most intense experiences are distilled into White Out. Messner will be our key creative partner on the movie.”

Arango is repped by ICM Partners, and attorneys David Fox and Jen Grega repped the Schwartzes and Chockstone. Messner’s attorney is Thomas Glückstein.
