Universal Pictures has moved the third installment of its Pitch Perfect franchise up by a few weeks from August 4, 2017, to July 21. That moves Pitch Perfect 3 off the Alien: Convenant date that it shared with 20th Century Fox and it now sits on the same date as the kid-friendly Ferdinand (also from Fox), the Tom Hardy-starring Dunkirk from Warner Bros and EuropaCorp’s Valerian. With that move, Pitch Perfect 3 comes only three weeks after the bow of another Universal threequel: Despicable Me 3, which comes on June 30 and will be the studio’s tentpole through the Fourth of July weekend.
The third in the Pitch Perfect series again stars Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson. The second in the series, 2015’s Pitch Perfect 2, ended up as the highest-grossing movie-musical opening of all time, taking $69.2M on its opening weekend May 15. PP3 again is being produced once Paul Brooks of Gold Circle Entertainment and Max Handelman & Elizabeth Banks of Brownstone Productions. Banks also is directing. The second Pitch Perfect ended up grossing $184.2M domestically, or roughly 64% of its $287.5M worldwide box office.
