The Film Arcade said today that Don’t Think Twice will open July 22 in New York, followed by a national rollout. The film from writer-director-star Mike Birbiglia premiered at SXSW and also screened at Tribeca last month.

The dramatic comedy revolves around an improv troupe made up of all best pals that loses the lease on its home theater just as one of its members gets chosen for the biggest sketch-comedy show on TV. It chronicles the fallout among the friends as they realize that maybe not everyone’s gonna make it after all. Keegan-Michael Key, Gillian Jacobs, Kate Micucci, Tami Sagher and Chris Gethard also star.

Don’t Think Twice is produced by Birbiglia, Ira Glass and Cold Iron Pictures’ Miranda Bailey and Amanda Marshall, and Andy Bohn and Jason Beck executive produce. Birbiglia and Glass also teamed on Sleepwalk With Me, which was based on Birbiglia’s play and premiered at Sundance in 2012. Said Glass of the new film’s theatrical prospects: “We’re already monitoring box office very closely, and see our main competitors as Captain America, Suicide Squad and X-Men. We think of Mike Birbiglia as our superhero — a sort of anxious, disheveled superhero who shows up at crimes and offers to call 911 after about ten minutes.”

Ahead of the film’s release, Birbiglia will hit the road in early June on a 20-city “Improv Across America” bus tour that will include free workshops with select improv comedy theaters and pop-up screenings of Don’t Think Twice.
