Already racking up an impressive number of awards and nominations just for its first season, the NETFLIX show Master Of None starring Aziz Ansari was part of NBC/Universal Television’s presentation at the first -ever Deadline  Contenders Emmys all day event held last month at the DGA Theatre. The Contenders Emmys - 630x423The show, which was named one of AFI’s Ten Best TV programs for 2015 as well as nabbing Best Comedy Series from the Critics Choice Awards and a Golden Globe nomination for Ansari,  was hatched while Ansari and Executive Producer Alan Yang were working on NBC’s Parks And Recreation.  As Yang explains it they co-created this series, taken largely from their own lives, about a 30-something actor in NYC named Dev Shah (Ansari). Netflix gave them the opportunity to do ten episodes that they were really passionate about  in a show that doesn’t follow a traditional sitcom route. As Yang explained to me on the NBC/U panel (that also included stars/producers  America Ferrera  of Superstore  and Eva Longoria of Telenovela)  no character from the first episode even appeared on the second except Ansari’s.  And the parents of Ansari’s character are actually his real  mother and father.  The good news now is the series has been picked up for a second season and will debut in April of 2017.  To see my conversation with Alan Yang just click on the link above.
