Marking the first time a Chinese production outfit has invested in a UK company, Andrea Hamilton has entered a joint venture with the Middle Kingdom’s 3C Media to create Om TV. Based in London, Om will focus on entertainment and factual entertainment for the UK, also working closely with 3C on international co-productions.
Hamilton, who will be Om TV’s CEO, has an extensive background in entertainment programming having exec produced BBC One’s hugely popular Strictly Come Dancing, and its off-shoots, as well as working as series editor on The Voice UK which this year moves to ITV. She was previously a commissioning editor at Sky1 where she oversaw the channel’s Oscars coverage, concert specials and formats such as Are You Smarter Than a 10 Year Old? and Project Catwalk.
The Middle Kingdom’s 3C Media was the first company to produce an international TV format in China with Strictly Come Dancing in 2006. In 2010, the company became the exclusive production partner for BBC Worldwide in China and went on to co-produce the Top Gear Chinese Special. It has since established ties with the territory’s major broadcasters and satellite channels.
China has increasingly sought out formats to localize for the booming market, and has recently found success in selling its own concepts outside the region.
