Shondaland will relinquish its stranglehold on ABC’s TGIT, for the fall anyway. New Notorious, inspired by the relationship of celebrity criminal defense attorney Mark Geragos and longtime Larry King Live cable news producer Wendy Walker, fills in for Scandal at 9 PM during Scandal star Kerry Washington’s pregnancy.

PRIYANKA CHOPRAMeanwhile, ABC is expanding its Tuesday comedy block to two hours in the fall which, added to Wednesday’s two hours and Friday’s one, maintain’s ABC’s status as the broadcast network with the biggest comedy footprint in the fall – five hours, compared to the 3.5 hours Fox announced during its Beacon Theatre Upfront presentation yesterday and the one hour that former broadcast king of comedy NBC announced at the NBCU Radio City Music Hall Upfront palooza.

Recently-named ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey is making her debut, Upfront presentation-wise, today at Lincoln Center’s recently renamed David Geffen Hall. But she’ll be joined by Upfront veteran Jimmy Kimmel, back for another of his his much-loved ABC Upfront Presentation seventh-inning stretch skewerings of practically everyone.

Presentation will be starting momentarily-ish:

Lisa de Moraes May 17, 20161:13 pm

ABC Upfront presentation starts with video of Quantico’s star Priyanka Chopra gets cryptic message about The End of Entertainment As We Know It and grills various ABC primetime stars, discovering It All Begins with ABC. She breaks into song, after shedding her detective outfit for something more appropriately red, sparkly, and skimpy. One well intended but kinda sad Prince nod moment later, she explains of the performance,  “In India we always start important  events with a dance party.” So it made perfect sense. She says she is so proud to be part of a company “that’s such a pioneer in entertainment.”

Disney/ABC TV Group president Ben Sherwood is escorted out on stage by Chopra, who has made another costume change, into something sophisticated.  Sherwood jokes that if media buyers were hoping the “dynamic” and “dazzling women” portion of the start was over, and it would now be turned over to the “middle aged white guy” portion of the event, they are in luck.

Lisa de Moraes May 17, 20161:18 pm

Sherwood makes Star Wars joke — next iteration debuting first on ABC before hitting theaters, thanks to Disney chief Bob Iger – and begins TV Works and Great TV Works Greatly pitch.

Lisa de Moraes May 17, 20161:19 pm

Sherwood gives big shout out to his new-ish ABC Entertainment chief Channing Dungey, calling her a “breath of fresh air.” Today, he noted, is her three-month anniversary of taking the job.

Lisa de Moraes May 17, 20161:21 pm

“Connection” is a word you’re going to hear a lot during ABC’s presentation, Sherwood warns. “It’s a mission statement. We are fortunate to be part of Disney, a company where magical connections are made around the world every single minute of every single day.”

Lisa de Moraes May 17, 20161:24 pm

Former ABC News chief Sherwood says his new Keiffer Sutherland as low-level cabinet member turned POTUS after devastating attack on Washington drama,Designated Survivor “may not be the strangest road to the White House this year.” (More on that when Donald Trump tweets his response)

Lisa de Moraes May 17, 20161:34 pm

ABC Entertainment Channing Dungey makes her entrance. “I know what you guys want to connect with. You want to connect with a cocktail,”  she tells media buyers. But first, a couple hours with her, she jokes. She admits to being nervous in her first Upfront presentation, which had been a  smart strategy during her morning news conference with press about the new lineup.

Lisa de Moraes May 17, 20161:41 pm

Expanding comedies,  and strengthening the 10 PM hour across schedule is ABC’s top priority next season, Dungey says.
She dives right into TGIT where Scandal is taking a breather this fall and Notorious taking its Thursday 9 PM timeslot.  It’s about “frenemies at top of their careers,” Dungey says. (He’s Mark Geragos inspired; she’s hot cable news producer based on Larry King producer Wendy Walker.)

Lisa de Moraes May 17, 20161:48 pm

Dungey praises Thursday’s kickoff drama Grey’s Anatomy for its ratings strength in 12th season.

Moving on to Sundays, she predicts  the “second season stronger than first”  of Secrets and Lies. In midseason, ABC will put into its Sunday 9 PM timeslot a midseason series that’s ABC’s contribution to this season’s hot time-travel trend: Time After Time. It’s from Kevin Williamson, and is an homage to sci-fi writer H.G. Wells. Wells is in pursuit of Jack the Ripper, who, is paying a visit to 2016.

Lisa de Moraes May 17, 20161:51 pm

Perfect time to walk through midseason, says Dungey:
Return of American Crime. Big applause.
New event series, Still Star Crossed is pitched as a sort of Shakespeare meets Shondaland. And British accents.

Lisa de Moraes May 17, 20161:55 pm

Dungey takes a break from schedule to discuss When We Rise, a limited series (eight hours) that chronicles history of the LGBT rights movement. Long-ish clip is shown. “It’s a truly incredible project and we are so proud to be Lance’s partner” she says of screenwriter Dustin Lance Black.

Lisa de Moraes May 17, 20161:58 pm

Clip of Dirty Dancing remake, three-hour filmed musical event this season, is enthusiastically received by media buyers.

Lisa de Moraes May 17, 20162:02 pm

ABC late night star Jimmy Kimmel’s deal has been renewed for another three years, Dungey says. So he’ll be nice to her. During his Upfront Presentation. Starting now:

Lisa de Moraes May 17, 20162:06 pm

The next Vice President of the United States, Jimmy Kimmel:
“Wow it’s so good to be here here again. Isn’t it? This is the 14th time I been here at the Upfront in New York. I’ve started to look forward to this. This is like a family reunion. Where’s Uncle Paul [Lee]? Oh, that’s right. I forgot…You hate to see anyone especially,  a British person lose his dental plan,” Kimmel said of the ABC Entertainment chief let go in February.
Lee’s replacement, Channing Dungey, “is too humble to mention she’s the first female African American network president ever to pick up a show about a talking dog, and I think that deserves a round of applause.”
“Was yesterday a long day?” Kimmel asks advertisers, solicitously, of Monday’s back to back Upfront presentations by NBC and Fox.  “Fucking NBC… Did they mention they have the Olympics?…This year I’ve heard they’re planning to give Bob Costas the Zika virus.”

Lisa de Moraes May 17, 20162:08 pm

Kimmel on industry’s mania for Millennials: “Are we going to let these vaping, SnapChatting, music-stealing little f**kers determine how we do business? We are?”

Lisa de Moraes May 17, 20162:08 pm

Kimmel on alternate viewing platforms: “Viewers love streaming content, which is why I’m proud to announce our new show: Porn. It’s a little slow at the start, but stick with it. It gets good toward the end.”

Lisa de Moraes May 17, 20162:10 pm

Kimmel on yesterday’s Fox Upfront presentation:  “Yesterday Fox said their audience is younger and their content buzzier. And I’ll ad ‘their bull is sh*ttier.’….Fox has Lucifer, which is based on the life of their founder Rupert Murdoch.”

Kimmel on CBS, which has its Upfront presentation tomorrow: “It’s amazing CBS is ablet to pick anything up, given the osteoporosis.”

Lisa de Moraes May 17, 20162:11 pm

Kimmel on Arnold Schwarzenegger as new host of NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice: “Should a guy who knocked up his maid be put in charge of an apprenticeship program?”

Lisa de Moraes May 17, 20162:12 pm

Dungey: “I’m wondering at this moment if we’ve closed Jimmy’s deal.”

Lisa de Moraes May 17, 20162:17 pm

Moving to comedy plans, Dungey says ABC Funny lineup “firing on all cylinders” and Tuesday comedy block being expanded to two hours.  The Middle kicks off Tuesday at 8 and Fresh off the Boat moves to 9 followed by The Real O’Neals. American Housewife is new entry at 8:30.

Lisa de Moraes May 17, 20162:23 pm

A clip of Wednesday’s new comedy, Speechless is played, and well received by media buyers.

Lisa de Moraes May 17, 20162:29 pm

“There’s an old saying in Hollywood,” Dungey begins. “‘If you don’t want your phone call returned, pitch a show about a dog’.”
That is totally not where I thought she was going, but as good a way as any to introduce new comedy Downward Dog.

After watching the clip, I’m in.

Lisa de Moraes May 17, 20162:34 pm

Finally Dungey gets to this seasons’ very hot drama, Designated Survivor. “It’s a big deal to get Kiefer Sutherland to come back to network television,” she says. He takes stage: He begins by thanking media buyers for their “incredible support” and how the greatest experiences of his professional life have been on television. When he was given the script, he said, he thought he would give it a cursory read only, because he wasn’t really thinking about returning to series TV.
“I found myself on page 25” saying ‘oh sh*t’ because, he said, he was potentially  “holding the next decade of my life.”

Long Designated Survivor clip gets big response from media buyers. And that wraps up ABC’s Upfront presentation, says Dungey, as the primetime stars of ABC join her on stage, including Chopra in her fourth costume change.

Except it doesn’t end the presentation – because the dog always wins, including getting the last line:
“I am so humble and super grateful, but I also just found out what Kiefer is making. I’m the only cast member.. who’s getting paid in literal dog biscuits. So, if somebody could take me for a walk?”

Already demanding.
