EXCLUSIVE: Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds is circling The Rosie Project, the Graeme Simsion-scripted pic that Scott Neustadter- and Michael Weber rewrote, an adaptation of the book by Simsion for Sony Pictures. This is the film that went back to drawing board after it got close to going with Richard Linklater directing Jennifer Lawrence, until both dropped out after Lawrence first exited to instead do Darren Aronofsky’s next project. Matt Tolmach and Michael Costigan are producing. Reynolds already is set to do a big project for Sony: He’s starring alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in Life, the Daniel Espinosa-directed Mars mission movie that the studio is making in partnership with Skydance.

Anything that happens will revolve around the sequel to Deadpool happening first. That is the priority, and it’s perfectly understandable. That film has surpassed The Matrix Reloaded to become the highest-grossing R rated film globally. It is creeping up on the domestic record, which is still held by The Passion of the Christ at $370M, with Deadpool moving closer at $355M. These are staggering sums for a movie that carried a $58M budget.

The Rosie Project tells the story of a socially inept genetics professor who comes up with a scientifically sound survey to find the perfect mate. His plans go awry when he meets Rosie Jarman, who in her whirlwind manner possesses all the opposite qualities he should be looking for. Reynolds is repped by WME. Sony said “any cast speculation at this point is premature.”
