RLJ Entertainment has picked up North American rights to The Mind’s Eye, a thriller from writer-director Joe Begos that premiered at Toronto last year. The pic revolves around Zack and Rachel (Graham Skipper and Lauren Ashley Carter), who both have telekinetic powers. When they are discovered by Dr. Slovak (John Speredakos), they think they have found someone who wants to help them. But they soon learn that his real intentions are to drain their abilities from them so he can use them for himself. Noah Segan co-stars in the pic, for which Begos won Best Director – Horror Feature at last year’s Fantastic Fest. Begos also produced along with Josh Ethier, Skipper and Zak Zeman. The film will hit theaters and on-demand later this year. The deal was negotiated by RLJ Chief Acquisitions Officer Mark Ward and SVP Legal and Business Affairs Jess De Leo with ICM Partners and Wayne Alexander on behalf of the filmmakers.
FilmBuff has acquired Welcome to Happiness, a comedy-drama-fantasy pic from writer-director Oliver Thompson. Kyle Gallner stars as Woody, a children’s author who rents a strange apartment from Moses (Nick Offerman). There’s a magical door in the closet that allows those who go through it to erase mistakes from their past. While he once was happy to facilitate the passage of the random strangers summoned to his apartment, Woody soon begins to question why he is not allowed to go through. The ensemble cast also includes Keegan-Michael Key, Molly C. Quinn, Olivia Thirlby, Josh Brener, Brendan Sexton III, Paget Brewster and Frances Conroy. Produced by Oliver Thompson, Bay Dariz, Gallner and Molly C. Quinn, Welcome to Happiness will open day-and-date May 20 in theaters and on-demand. Sam Scupp negotiated the deal on behalf of FilmBuff.
