EXCLUSIVE: June Pictures and B Story are saddling up for a May start on Thoroughbred, a psychological thriller that marks the directorial debut of playwright-screenwriter Cory Finley. Olivia Cooke, who stars later this year in Ready Player One, stars with Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) and Green Room‘s Anton Yelchin. Financed by June Pictures, the film focuses on a volatile friendship between two suburban teenage girls who discover that a murder might solve both of their problems.
June’s Alex Saks and Andrew Duncan are producing with B Story’s Kevin J. Walsh, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash. B Story’s Ryan Stowell will executive produce. The picture will shoot on the East Coast.
June Pictures, which Duncan and Saks launched as a portfolio company of IGX LLC, previously set a summer start date for The Florida Project, which marks Tangerine helmer Sean Baker’s next film; the company’s first film is Operator, which premiered at SXSW. The recently completed Dude is in postproduction.
B Story’s Faxon and Rash, who most recently wrote and directed The Way Way Back, won the Adapted Screenplay Oscar with Alexander Payne for The Descendants. Walsh’s latest, the Kenneth Lonergan-directed Manchester By The Sea, was acquired in a splashy Sundance deal by Amazon and Roadside Attractions and releases November 18.
Cooke is repped by Grandview, Gersh, Shepherd Management and attorney Gretchen Rush; Taylor-Joy by CAA, Troika and Felker Toczek; Yelchin is CAA and attorney David Weber and Finley is repped by ICM Partners. ICM Partners will rep domestic rights to the film.
