The South Korea government says a man who defected from North Korea last year was a senior-level officer in the Reconnaissance General Bureau, the elite military spy organization that the FBI Sony Hack GOPholds responsible for “overseeing” the 2014 hack attack against Sony. The RGB handles cyberwarfare for Pyongyang and is one of the key units of the North Korean People’s Army. “It is a particularly nasty operation,” ex-CIA analyst Bruce Klingner told CNN today. “It’s not only involved in gathering intelligence … it’s also involved in all of the terrorist kind of operations.” The South Korean government described the RGB official as the highest-level military official ever to defect from North Korea, and said he has been granted political asylum. South Korean news agency Yonhap reported that he already has revealed secrets regarding the espionage activities of his former agency. No news on whether he has provided any information on the Sony hack attack, which North Korea had denied involvement with.
