“He came from nothing and changed everything.” Here is our first look at Hands of Stone, the Roberto Duran biopic starring Edgar Ramírez as the Panamanian brawler and Robert De Niro as legendary trainer Ray Arcel. Jonathan Jakubowicz wrote and the directed the pic, which The Weinstein Company will release August 26.
Usher Raymond IV stars as Sugar Ray Leonard, who lost to Duran in 1980 then turned around and beat him five months later in the infamous “No Mas” fight. If that’s all you’ve ever heard about Duran, that’s a shame. A true rags-to-riches story, he was mean, skilled and relentless in the ring, but that one moment still defines the man with los manos a piedra. And man, he hated Leonard — not with the camera-friendly glower of the average boxing rivalry but with a white-hot passion. He saw the Olympic champion as a showboating pretty boy whose smile was bigger than his heart. Their fights in their prime remain legend for fans of the sweet science.
Ellen Barkin, Ruben Blades and Ana de Armas also star in Hands of Stone, which TWC picked up at Cannes last year. Go a round with the teaser and tell us what you think.
