Fox has given a 10-episode series order to Famous, a half-hour comedy created by veteran comedy writer-producer Ralph Farquhar (Real Husbands Of Hollywood, Moesha) and A Girl Like Grace co-writer/director/co-star Ty Hodges. It has been slated for the Sunday 9-9:30 PM time slot, premiering on June 12.
Filmed in mock-documentary style at a couples therapy session, Famous features dating high school teachers Fred and Geneva, both of whom secretly aspire to work in Hollywood. He wants to be a screenwriter and she envisions stardom as a pop diva. One of those dreams miraculously comes true when Geneva lands a record deal after her first music video goes viral and logs millions of views. As she rises to stardom, Fred feels pushed to the sidelines. Can this couple survive or will they discover that being famous and in love makes for a complicated threesome?
Famous was originally pitched to Fox a few years ago under the old regime when the network ordered a presentation but ultimately passed on it. When Fox toppers were looking for summer programming this year, a creative executive brought up Famous. It was very well received, leading to the series order.
Created and written by Farquhar and Hodges, Famous has been laid off at 20th Century Fox Television. It is currently casting. Farquhar serves as executive producer. Hodges is a supervising producer; he won’t be acting.
Therapy has been a ripe setting for TV series with such shows as HBO drama In Treatment and online/Showtime comedy Web Therapy.
Farquhar is repped by Jim Kellem at JKA Talent.
