EXCLUSIVE: Ethan Hawke is one of those few actors who can segue comfortably between playing the sensitive guy (Before Sunrise, Reality Bites) and man at his most primal (the upcoming The Magnificent Seven, Training Day). In The Phenomthe four-time Oscar-nominated actor portrays an ex-con father, whose tough love has turned into a head game for his major league pitcher son Hopper Gibson (Johnny Simmons). When the rookie is demoted to the minor leagues, he looks to an unorthodox sports therapist played by Paul Giamatti to set his head right. It’s there that Hopper learns his father is the root of all anxiety. Tribeca Film Festival  alum Noah Buschel (Glass Chin) directed this drama, which is one of a few sports-related films here at the fest this week including Brent Hodge’s female basketball documentary Pistol Shrimps and Bart Freundlich’s high school basketball drama Wolves. RLJ Entertainment will release The Phenom day and date on June 24.
