Demolition opened with something closer to a muffled rumble than an explosion. The Fox Searchlight title starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Naomi Watts took in over $1.12M in more than 850 theaters, a figure reflecting the fairly wide release but a slow per-theater average. But Demolition was a solid edifice compared to Focus World’s Mr. Right, which opened in nearly three dozen locations, averaging just $714. Kino Lorber’s Neon Bull topped the crowd of generally unspectacular newcomers, grossing over $7K in a single location. Drafthouse Films’ thriller The Invitation ticked a nearly $68K gross in 10 theaters in its bow, while The Orchard’s family drama Louder Than Bombs with Jesse Eisenberg, Gabriel Byrne and Isabellle Huppert averaged just over $6K from several opens. Sony Classics’ Miles Ahead, starring and directed by Don Cheadle, and Paramount’s Everybody Wants Some!! by Richard Linklater both outstripped the newbies in expansion in their second frames. Warner Bros.’ Midnight Special held well in expansion in its fourth weekend.

Searchlight bowed French-Canadian director Jean-Marc Vallée’s Demolition in 854 theaters Friday. The 2015 Toronto International Film Festival opener had a rough start, averaging only $1,317 from a $1,125,000 gross. Give kudos to Searchlight for telling it like it is. The company said Sunday when reporting numbers: “While the results have been disappointing so far, it is great to be working once again with a filmmaker as visionary and focused as Jean-Marc Vallee, and an actor as talented as Jake.” The distributor released Vallée’s previous title, Wild starring Reese Witherspoon, but took a different route when it took the title out in December, 2014. Wild opened in 21 theaters, grossing $606K ($28,896 average), going on to cume nearly $38M. Going a bit further back, Focus opened Vallée’s Dallas Buyers Club starring Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey, though again it was only in 9 theaters in its opening weekend. It grossed almost $261K , averaging nearly $29K. It went on to gross over $27.29 million.

Mr. Right struggled to build an audience in its debut. The Focus World title opened in 35 theaters, grossing just $25K for a $714 PTA, though it is a day and date release. Drafthouse Films’ thriller The Invitation fared better in it initial 10 theater start. Starring Logan Marshall-Green, the feature grossed nearly $68K, averaging $6,774. Outpacing it in the PTA race was Zeitgeist’s doc Vita: The Spirit Of Hannah Arendt, which grossed $13,444 in a single location. Kino Lorber’s Venice and Toronto drama Neon Bull also played one theater, grossing $7,133. It will head to L.A. next week and nationally through May. The Orchard’s Louder Than Bombs opened 4 theaters, grossing over $24K ($6,085 average). The company said it will expand the title “across North America” in the coming weeks.

In their second frame, Paramount’s Everybody Wants Some!! and Sony Pictures Classics’ Miles Ahead outshined their new counterparts as they took on additional locations. SPC added 21 runs for Cheadle’s Miles Davis biopic, grossing over $227K, averaging $9,096. Paramount added 44 theaters for Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some!! for week 2. The title grossed $510K in 63 theaters, averaging just over $8K.

Vaxxed-poster-600x889Vaxxed, which opened last week after being pulled from this year’s Tribeca Film Fest lineup stayed exclusively at a single location in its second weekend. It grossed $7K, a sizable drop from its $22K opening weekend. It will next head to Laemmle’s Monica Film Center starting April 15.

In its third weekend, IFC Films added 27 runs for Born To Be Blue with decent results. Starring Ethan Hawke, the feature grossed $108,100, averaging $2,300. Last weekend, it averaged $4,260 in 20 theaters. It has cumed over $411K. The distributor’s Sundance Selects label added 10 theaters for doc City Of Gold’s 5th weekend, grossing $60K ($1,200 average) for a $481,392 cume.

MIDNIGHT SPECIALWarner Bros. added 435 theaters for Jeff Nicols’ Midnight Special in its fourth weekend. In 493 theaters, the film grossed a solid $1,156,000, averaging $2,345. Its cume is now just under $2.3 million.

Bleecker Street took Eye In The Sky to an additional 60 locations for its fifth frame, also holding well. Eye grossed over $2.8 million, averaging $2,598. Last weekend, the war thriller starring Helen Mirren grossed just over $4M, averaging $3,941.

Also in its firth weekend, A24’s Remember crossed $1 million. In 49 theaters, it grossed $74K, averaging $1,510.

And Open Road’s 2016 Oscar Best Picture winner Spotlight is still in theaters and is getting close to a new cumulative threshold. The film grossed $85,602 now in its 24th weekend in theaters, averaging $764. Its cume as of Sunday afternoon is at just over $44.73 million.
