Dean, written and directed by Demetri Martin, tells the bittersweet story of a Brooklyn illustrator (Martin) coping with his mother’s recent death. Single after having dumped his fiancee, he spends most of his time drawing very dark cartoons about death, until he travels to Los Angeles for possible new work. While there, he meets an unlikely love interest (Gillian Jacobs) and gradually begins to cope with his changed family dynamic back home. The film premiered to great acclaim at Tribeca 2016 and went on to win the festival’s Founders Award for Best Narrative Feature, and in this exclusive video filmed at Deadline’s Tribeca Studio, Martin and Jacobs talk about how the film came together, about the collaborative process that went into making it, and influences.
