EXCLUSIVE: Gotham actor Cory Michael Smith has joined the cast of Todd Haynes’ upcoming drama Wonderstruck. From Amazon Studios, it’s based on the novel by Brian Selznick and follows the intertwined stories of two deaf children: Ben, living with his family in 1977 Minnesota, who runs off to New York after his mother’s death when a mysterious note shows up, and Rose, locked in a house in 1927 New Jersey, who herself escapes to New York to see her idol, film actress Lillian Mayhew. Smith is playing Walter, Rose’s older brother, with Millicent Simmonds recently cast as Rose. This is Smith’s second time working with Todd Haynes, having also appeared in Carol. He currently appears as Edward Nygma (AKA The Riddler) on Fox’s Gotham. He’s repped by Paradigm and Circle of Confusion.
New Girl co-star Max Greenfield is in talks to join Lionsgate’s The Glass Castle, the adaptation of the Jeannette Walls memoir that stars Oscar winner Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson and Naomi Watts. Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed Larson in Short Term 12, is helming this one and co-wrote the script with Andrew Lanham. The dramedy centers on a successful young woman raised by severely dysfunctional parents — an alcoholic father and oddball mother — who struggles to understand her childhood when her parents, unexpectedly, move to New York to be near her. Greenfield, repped by WME, will play Larson’s husband. Variety reported this casting first and Lionsgate declined comment.
