EXCLUSIVE: Caskett no more. I have learned that ABC is planning a ninth season of the venerable crime procedural without one of its two stars, female lead Stana Katic, who plays Detective Kate Beckett to Nathan Fillion’s writer-turned-PI Rick Castle. It is the main part of a major shakeup on the series, which also includes the departure of fellow original cast member Tamala Jones. Fillion has been in negotiations to return to Castle, which I hear is eyeing a shortened, likely 13-episode, ninth season, at a reduced license fee.
I hear the decision for Katic not to return was made by ABC and ABC Studios. Both Fillion and Katic last spring inked one-year contracts, which are up at the end of the current eighth season. While the studio started making overtures to Fillion for a new deal months ago and has been in on- and off- talks with him since the beginning of the year, I hear Katic was never approached to re-up her contract and was not offered an opportunity to continue on the show. Instead, I hear she, as well as Jones, were informed late last week that for budgetary reasons, they won’t be asked to come back for Season 9.
Katic would not comment on the circumstances surrounding her exit. When asked about the departure, she told Deadline, “Rather then distract from what was an amazing experience, I would just like to say that I’m very grateful to ABC for giving me the opportunity to be a part of a much beloved show. Thank you to the fans.”
Since Castle has not been renewed, ABC would not comment on any plans for the length of the potential Season 9 but confirmed to Deadline that Katic and Jones won’t be part of it.
“Kate Beckett has been a beloved character on our hit series Castle for the past 8 years. We are grateful for Stana Katic’s talent and dedication to the series and we hope to continue our relationship,” ABC said in a statement to Deadline. “Tamala Jones has also been an integral part of the series and we are grateful she was a part of Castle.“
Jones played the whip-smart medical examiner Lanie Parish who was Beckett’s close friend and confidante. “I’ve had so much fun playing the wonderful and unfiltered Lanie over the past eight seasons,” Jones said in a statement to Deadline. “I will greatly miss the cast and crew – it’s been a privilege getting to work with this incredibly hard working group of people. Thank you to ABC for this opportunity and to the fans for their unwavering support. It’s been an incredible journey and I can’t wait for what lies ahead!”
None of the other Castle cast members besides Fillion have been given an indication about their future on the show though sources indicate that Seamus Dever and Jon Huertas would likely return alongside Fillion who is said to be close with them while not getting along so well with Katic. (Fillion and Katic only filmed together two days a week this season, which was stipulated in Fillion’s contract amid reports of on-set tension between the two.)
While the series is called Castle, Beckett’s character has been as prominent on the show, which evolved into a two-lead Moonlighting-style comedic drama. Castle creator Andrew Marlowe had always called the Castle/Beckett relationship central to the concept of the series.
Marlowe left Castle at the end of last season when Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter were named new showrunners. The two were handed the difficult task of shepherding the eighth season with the future of the series and its stars up in the air. Amid that uncertainty, the show filmed two different endings for the upcoming Season 8 finale, including a cliffhanger one in which I hear both Castle and Beckett’s lives are left hanging in the balance.
“There’s stuff up in the air, so we are trying to leave it in a very dynamic way which leaves open the possibility that maybe the show won’t come back in the same form next season — although, again, we really hope that it does,” Hawley told TVLine over the weekend.’
The departure of Katic and Jones is expected to be used to attempt a creative reboot, which is difficult to accomplish so late in the life of a show. Long-running series like Castle are expensive, and with ratings inevitably slipping, implementing cost reductions is not uncommon though those rarely affect the stars of a show. While Castle‘s ratings are down vs. last season, the crime series has been a reliable performer, posting a 1.1 adults 18-49 Live+same rating for the last six airings and getting close to tying its season high of 1.2 last Monday with a 1.14 rating. The show’s DVR gains have been solid, with the April 4 episode growing 55% to a 1.7 L+3 demo rating.

They are hard to write for very long.
I guess it depends on what type of show and how long is long. Hart to Hart and Moonlighting were both four to five years. MacMillian and Wife was six years. Those are probably the closest theme-wise. Some comedies and soap operas were longer of course. Couples can make the best partners if done right.

Not to make a moot point but the last show Nathan Fillion was a lead in was Drive and that made it through four episodes before it was canned.
I had never seen Nathan or Stana in anything before Castle. Since so much was made of the fact that Nathan and others being brought onto the show that had appeared in Firefly I decided to look up the reviews of critics and the viewing audience of the show. First I found out that the series lasted only 14 episodes. Next I discovered that the reason why it only lasted 14 episodes was because it was totally stupid and inane. Do any of the supporters of Nathan is a buffoon and cannot act without an outstanding straight costar to leek things grounded in reality instead of some fairy tale.
I enjoyed the film, Serenity, and later those few episodes of Firefly. That was why I watched Castle. There are different tastes, for sure.

The show died 2 years ago with her insufferable complaining and bickering with CASTLE, the title star. There is zero chemistry between the two, the strain of working together is evident in the dialogue and development of the stories each week, and it’s part of the reason why they brought in another loser, Tom’s Olang., to add a bit of drama and comic relief, which resulted in a super fail. If the weekly dying on a vine ratings of 1.1 and 5-6 million viewers weren’t clues enough that the show is in ruins and has been for some time now, then nothing would clue SOME PEOPLE as to the obvious. DWTS, it’s lead show, still gets ratings above a 2.0 and total viewers in the teens of millions on a weekly basis. CASTLE use to do these types of numbers, but the strained relationship and resulting bad plot developments pushed away mainstream viewers in droves to get to the point where the show is now. People denying this are the same types of people that insist that Americans basically watch the show for Beckett, but the downfall of the ratings indicates otherwise.

Very true the castle hasn’t been the same since season six .after they made her a captain and had him do a private eye thing they wrecked the chemistry between them and the day to day working together ended the show for me
Since management blew up their best asset by dumping Stana from the show, they might be able to recover, if they spin her off into her own show. Castle as a show, is dead without Stana. They could have given her better story lines and allowed her to more fully show her depth of acting nuance that she can portray, if she was given the chance. So far, the writers recently have kept her in a straight jacket emotionally, for their unknown purpose. Seeing now, that the administrators have no clue about their treasure, my advice is to find a way to maximize Stana, rather than give her the boot. If they don’t and let her slip away, someone else will sign her up, and then she may really put the boots to ABC ratings.
That’s the real point. Execs ruined the show when they broke Nathan and Stana up. The PI thing was a joke. They worked well together and that was what people tuned in to see. One line from early on sums it up for me, Stana, in response to a questions, says, “We were doing our jobs, no, I was doing my job, I don’t know what the hell he was doing.” It was that dynamic that kept things fresh, the downward spiral began with that ridiculous move to DC. Too bad too because I really liked this show.
I liked the show with Beckett and Castle and watched it faithfully.
I might stop watching Castle since Stana Katic won’t be on it. I think here and Castle had good chemistry. I was fun watching them flirt around and solve cases. Although, I will give it a short my expectations are not very high.

It could die or disappear everyone, and I’d be very unhappy with that, but not THEM. And I really think that all the ones who follow and love the serie since the beginning agree with me. There is no Starsky without Hutch, Tunner without Hooch… ALWAYS without CASQUETT!

There are always two kinds of viewers for shows like this – the ones who watch for the evolving relationship between the romantic leads, and the the ones who watch the show for the crime solving week after week. For the first group, this pretty much spells the end of the show. For the second, this paves the way for nothing but crime solving. As a member of the first group, I can honestly say the crime solving was never that great, sort like watching the same story week after week (somebody is murdered, clues are gathered, the murder’s solved …. *yawn*). Regardless of a fans reason for viewing, however, it should be noted that neither group survives without the other, ratings-wise. This move will mostly likely eliminate at least half the viewing audience which signals the end, no matter why you watch the show.
I don’t know about your opinion regarding people who enjoy crime solving sticking around for Castle. I watched last weeks episode with the man who wouldn’t die and quite frankly, the show was an embarrassment. Fillion fumbled around, trying to be funny but it just looked awkward and pathetic. I usually like his banter and quick witted culture references but it’s either wearing thin on me or the quality of his quips have diminished. I vote the latter.
Beckett has been on the show less and less and other than a few two shots she was never on the screen with Castle, making me believe they shoot her separate and then edit her in during post production. I noticed this about a month ago and it has just escalated till it’s obvious.
The quality of the show has gone down hill and some of the character development decisions have me scratching my head. I like Alexa but for someone who went off to college, it seems strange and complete plot convenience just to keep her on the show. That new British gal? Nice to look at, She’s competent with her character but she seems like cellulose fiber. Not very tasty but she does fill a need.
I’m almost done with the show now. My only interest is to see how they get rid of Stana and will she solve the mystery of her mothers death – thus capturing the guilty. Once that’s done I’ll probably watch the first episode next year and make a decision. If these last months worth of episodes are any indication on what to expect, I probably won’t last the first commercial break.
Castle has had it’s run. There’s no shame in ending it now.

I do not know what show you have been watching. The later parts of Season Seven and Most of Season Eight have been most without Beckett and with Castle trying to carry most of the lines which is backwards from how Andrew and Terri wrote the show which was told from Beckett’s POV and emotional arch and it was a dramatic love story. The ratings prove that Andrew and Terri knew what they were doing. The ratings trash of Season eight proves that Alexi Hawley and Nathan Fillion can neither produce a show worth anything in the ratings and cannot carry a show.

then broke up. The effect on the show was obvious. Nathan became jealous of the
professional development and the
growing love of Stana’s role and character
in the series while his role became one
of playing the role of the buffoon who
believed in fairy tales and in their
nonsense. Beckett was the one who
had to keep the series grounded in
sane and rational reality while Castle
went off to play with the rest of the
children. The purpose of Castle’s
role was to interject comedy into
an otherwise serious show about
murder mysteries but his antics
soon became tedious and
boring. Give me Stana anytime
and send Nathan back to grade
school where the children will
think that his childish behavior

I don’t know about Fillion being “jealous” of Katic’s professional development. It should be noted that Fillion was the one who won the Peoples Choice award for best male actor. In the female category, Stana did not (an injustice in my opinion). All this nonsense about who “made” the show and who was baggage is just that, however – nonsense. The two together were two vital parts of a complete recipe. You can eat spaghetti without meat sauce, or meat sauce without spaghetti, but neither is as satisfying as spaghetti and meat sauce together. Feel free to insert your own favorite food combos to complete the analogy. :)

I must disagree. Another buddy, buddy cop show is the last boring thing TV needs. The Kate character as you describe her is what made the show unique. The contrast between those character traits and the developing love between Kate and Castle could have been developed much further if everyone involved , pulled their heads out and realized what a unique show they were involved in. The mix of drama and comedy happens alot on TV, but not done as well as on Castle. A great loss.

Castle is cancelled. The downfall started when the original management guiders were no longer involved…why did they depart? Subsequent management was completely out of touch with the show’s fan base, and what essentially made the show financially profitable. Through discrimination, they blew up their financial asset, and predictably, the economic viability of the show evaporated, when viewers said loudly, that they would not go along with management machinations for how they pushed the stars around with contracts. In the end, the financial bottom line dictated the cancellation result. Management drove the the “Rolls Royce” into the ditch and made it worthless. Therefore they should be held to account. Can one imagine in any other corporation, where local management creates huge loses through bad decisions, they would not be held to account? The ones who destroyed economic value through incompetence and malevolent behavior, should get the boot. It is called shareholder discipline.
Better end the show after season 8 with a 2 hour – “film” like CSI did, with all characters in.

first off the 2 stars are what made this show. having castle acting like a jackass for 80% of an episode really isn’t that interesting. Alexis being shove down your throat every minute and her knowing everything is just ridiculous considering a couple seasons earlier she was asking for space and has never made any sense after that. Hayley is also a very unexplained character which you’ve gotten completely no background on at all. The writer part and inspiration section of the show she had are what made the show which they completely shat on.
WHAT writer part? That was a gimmick to get Castle an in to work with the PD. What is it you want to do, watch him sit in front of his computer (or typewriter if he’s old school) and type for an hour? The show is about his exploits with the PD, tied in to his romance with Beckett. If the show outlasts Beckett’s departure, I don’t think there will be anyone out there who isn’t VERY surprised. Personally, I think it would be great if they managed to rally this show without ‘Kate,’ that storyline died a long time ago. And I think they should kill her character off. Castle doesn’t need another ex-wife hanging around waiting for guest appearance opportunities.

Agreed. This show has always been Beckett’s story, just told through Castle’s eyes. I didn’t like the Beckett character much the first few seasons, but the character grew on me. Flawed characters are always the most interesting. And the ensemble cast really added to the show. This season, everyone looked like they were just mailing it in; no emotion at all.
I’ve watched all of season 8, but I’ve stopped trying to figure out why. I was hoping for a season 8 last year, but, at this point, I wished they’d have ended the series with the season 7 “Hollander’s Woods” finale.
I have all seven seasons on DVD (don’t know if I’ll spring for the eighth). It’s great to go back and watch them (season 5 was the best all-around, in my opinion), but it’s also kind of sad, since it’s a reminder of how great the show used to be.

When the two leads cannot stand to be in the same room with each other, something’s got to give. Anyone remember a show called Moonlighting? Willis and Shepherd HATED each other Which is why that show imploded. They should have cancelled Castle a LONG time ago, before it became so painful and then impossible to watch.

Watching Katic act is like watching paint dry. Now that her face is frozen with botox she doesn’t even have expressions any more. She seems to be the only person in Hollywood that can’t get along with Nathan so I think that gives you a good indication of who was behind the problems between the 2.

She’s the one that forced schedule adjustments because of her other movie commitments taking longer than planned and taking time off in the middle of the shooting season because she was too busy to take her honeymoon during the break. So put the blame for the two Castle-centric episodes where it belongs…

If ABC has any sense at all, they will end it this season and be done. Castle fans deserve a happy ending and not a dead Beckett. I can’t believe how they’ve taken one of the greatest shows of this decade and ruined it from the beginning of season 8. Ugh.
Just put the show out of its mysety. Go out with dignity.

Huh, so this is the second show this season where new showrunners have no issues with losing a lead so that they can shape a show into their vision. Shades of Sleepy Hollow.

I see your sarcasm and I agree continuing Castle without Beckett is simply a bad move BUT the thing with your examples is that Melissa and Calista will never be replaced on SUPERGIRL because the show is ABOUT SUPERGIRL. Thing with Castle is they started the series with Richard Castle as the titular character same with Ichabod Crane on Sleep Hollow, Oliver Queen on Arrow etc. these guys cannot be fired unless they do something stupid because the show is based on THEM. in that light too, shows like Greys Anatomy and Law and Order SVU chose to keep the FEMALE over the male because the show was based on the FEMALE. if it ever came down to the wire and a show like Scandal needed to choose between Olivia and the President, the president would be the one axed, no questions about it. so it’s not as black and white as oh males being chosen over females.
WTF, the fans will bail like crazy without both leads so just give us the “happy satisfying ending” you promised back in Jan and call it quits. Nathan, say no so they don’t let you both die in an explosion but live happily somewhere. Without Beckett Castle is no PI, even in LA as a part of the GDS. So forget it and end on a positive note.

look at the impact.
1) Ryan, Espisito and Lanie are no
longer needed because they work
for the NYPD and are happy there.
Money saved.
2) Hayley and Vikram are no longer
needed. They were brought on
board because of LokSat. LokSat
will be resolved in 8×22. Send them
back where they came from. Money
saved.
3) Martha no longer needed. Martha
now has a very successful career
in NY theatrical pursuits and
would not move to LA and start all
over again. Money saved.
4) Alexis no longer needed. She would
soon get bored with most cases
dealing only in spousal abuse and
spousal cheating. Send her back
to college. Money saved.
5) Castle no longer needed. With no
Beckett and no connection to the
LAPD Castle cases would primarily
be limited to spousal cheating and
abuse and who wants to watch that.
Let Castle take his ego trips, chest
pounding and immature behavior
somewhere else. Considerable money
saved.
Looks like I am going to have to find a new Monday night show in the fall. If ABC needed to trim the fat on Castle it should have started with those who play the useless, peripheral characters that are forced into stories week after week, NOT the co-lead.
I hear good things about Blindspot on NBC. Give the competition a boost.

Blindspot is excellent. Strong female and males leads, great storylines and great tension between the characters.
As far am I’m concerned, there is no Castle without Beckett. I’m out. If ABC thinks they’ll maintain viewership, they are living in a fantasy world.

Exactly. The ineptitude of ABC has been legendary as regards this show. It’s easier for them to fire the principal actress, rather than taking care of the course of the show for the past three seasons. No, ABC, females are not and should not be treated as expendables. PR masters. LOL

Fillion is the one who demanded a change in the show’s direction, not Stana. Well reported last year! The entire crew (not cast) has spilled on Fillion being an abusive A-Hole to Stana. Fat has-been (never-was) caused this.
Never liked him and not watching after this season.
I’ve heard the husband gripe for years about Castle being made to look and act like a goof, a doofus. He didn’t like it that Castle was no longer the unique brain, solving the crimes, and the emphasis being put on an uncooperative Beckett. The husband’s been wanting the show to go the direction of a happy marriage like Macmillan & Wife, and this change is bumming him out. However, he is upset about this actor bashing, “What? That’s not fair!”
Looking forward to Katic’s next gig. A dark drama series would be nice.
Why stop at just Beckett & Lanie’s characters, why not get rid of all the strong female characters… This past season with Captain Gates and now this… Hollywood is horribly s exist still… does ABC think the viewership will still be there with out the better half of the dynamic duo. It would be one thing if Katic was the one to ask for an out to pursue other ventures but since ABC was the one to cut ties it is becoming apparent they really are not connected to their audience.
Show makes no since without her character. Doubt I watch season 9.

Stana was the only reason I stayed with this terrible season. Season 7 was also bad but worsened this season

I also am very sad to see Stana leave. The show will not be the same & not sure if I can watch it anymore. In my opinion as a viewer why change it when it worked so well. I’m sorry you’ve just taken my Monday night enjoyment of TV from me. I truly loved this show😢
