EXCLUSIVE: Reset, the ballet documentary featuring dancer-choreographer Benjamin Millepied that just had its North American premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, is hitting big screens in the fall. FilmRise has just landed U.S. distribution rights to the pic, which follows the man behind the ballet of Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan as he mounts his first production as director of the famed Paris Opera Ballet. (Check out the trailer below.)
Millepied, who is married to Black Swan star Natalie Portman, resigned as head of the 335-year-old institution in February after a bit more than a year in the job, a move that raised eyebrows in the ballet world. He was frank in his criticism of the troupe and the institution’s rigidity, some of which comes out in the docu, which world premiered in France as Relève on Canal Plus.
Thierry Demaizière and Alban Teurlai directed the docu, which was produced by Stéphanie Schorter. The pic got a warm reception from the Tribeca crowds during its screenings.
The deal was negotiated between FilmRise CEO Danny Fisher and VP Acquisitions Max Einhorn with Severine Garusso of Upside Distribution. Said Fisher: “With masterful filmmaking that mirrors the artistry of its subject, we are confident the film will win over audiences and critics alike when it comes to theaters this fall.”
