Films based on real life don’t necessarily have to cast actors who look exactly like their subjects. For instance, Michael Fassbender and Joaquin Phoenix score Oscar noms for their respective roles as Steve Jobs and Johnny Cash. But it doesn’t hurt (see Tom Hiddleston as Hank Williams). Now we have our first look at Oscar nominees Emma Stone and Steve Carell as Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs in Battle of the Sexes — and it’s no wonder Fox Searchlight sent out a shot of the real tennis legends along with the pic from its movie:

Battle of the Sexes

Production has begun in Los Angeles on the film, which chronicles the 1973 tennis grudge match between over-the-hill pro and avowed male chauvinist (and hustler) Riggs and then-reigning queen of the court and avowed feminist King. The photo(s) above depict the memorable news conference they held to announce the “Battle of the Sexes.” Produced by Christian Colson and Danny Boyle, written by Simon Beaufoy, and directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, the film also features Elisabeth Shue, Sarah Silverman, Alan Cumming, Andrea Riseborough, Eric Christian Olsen, Natalie Morales, Austin Stowell, Wallace Langham, Jessica McNamee, Mickey Sumner and Bill Pullman.
