SPOILER WARNING: The events of tonight’s episode of Sleepy Hollow are discussed in detail below.
The show’s renewal fate has not yet been decided, but it seems the producers of Fox’s Sleepy Hollow are preparing for the possibility that season 3 will be its last: for the second week in a row, a major character has been killed off, permanently.
This time, it’s one of the show’s two main characters, as the closing moments of tonight’s episode saw Detective Abbie Mills, played by Nicole Beharie, sacrifice herself to save the world from The Hidden One. Soon after in a statement to our sister site TV Line, Beharie confirmed she’s leaving the show, saying “Sleepy Hollow has been an incredible experience in every way. I loved playing Abbie. It’s been such a gift to have taken this wild ride… Alas, ‘Abbie Mills has done all she was meant to do.'”
“I’m excited about what the show has in store for us next. I’m rooting for my co-stars and crew… they have been my inspiration, my teachers, family, my friends, over the last few seasons,” she continued. “I want to thank the fantastic producers, writers, and directors who have worked tirelessly to bring this show to life. I want to thank Fox for their faith and support. But, most of all, [I want to thank the] Sleepyheads for all of your love – what an honor. I will never be the same. Stay tuned.”
Fox television released a statement after the episode’s East Coast airing, saying the death of Mills is “a very dramatic ending and a bold move for the show, but SLEEPY HOLLOW has always been known for its shocking finales.” Adding that the network considers it a “poignant conclusion” for the character and thanking Beharie for being part of the series, Fox also confirmed that renewal talks are ongoing. “We are currently discussing Season Four, and should the series be picked up for another season, we have some exciting scenarios and new avenues we want to explore.”
Beharie has been with the series since its 2013 debut and has been central to the show’s central myth arc. Fittingly, tonight’s episode ended with a tribute of sorts to the outgoing co-lead, with Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison) and Abbie reliving their partnership from the pilot through the current season before Mills tells him she was at peace. The episode ended with Crane at Abbie’s grave, learning that he has to find a replacement for her before the FBI does.
Last week, the show killed off season 3 regular character Joe Corbin, played by Zach Appelman.
