The Royals creator Mark Schwahn has signed a deal with the two studios behind the E! drama series, Lionsgate and Universal Cable Productions. Under the multi-year pact, he will continue as executive producer/showrunner of The Royals, which was recently renewed for a third season. The agreement also includes a first-look deal for Schwahn to develop scripted programming, which will be co-produced by Lionsgate and UCP.
The Royals, revolving around a fictional royal family, stars Elizabeth Hurley, William Moseley, Alexandra Park, Tom Austen, and Jake Maskall. Schwahn is executive producing the series alongside Brian Robbins, Joe Davola and Shauna Phelan.
“Mark knows how to create compelling and dynamic television that helps build networks, and he also knows how to develop characters and expand the worlds in which they live over many seasons,” said Kevin Beggs, Chairman of Lionsgate’s Television Group. Added Jeff Wachtel, President, Universal Cable Productions, “We love what Mark continues to do with The Royals, he has a natural talent for weaving drama with pop culture and creating sensational characters with mass appeal.”
Previously, Schwahn created and executive producer of the long-running the WB/CW drama One Tree Hill.
